Do You Shoot with Film?

personal, Portraitsjacqueline horningComment

While I do only for personal use at this point, I love the qualities of film. It’s imperfect and tends to be a little grainy in the best ways. The images below aren’t edited at all; these are images from scanned negatives and uploaded. Just for fun, I thought I’d share a few of them here since I get as giddy as a schoolgirl when processed film is ready. (Remember those days??)

This is E when she was about 14 months old in May 2015. They’ll be in the baby book. :)

As August was going out with a 90 degree bang, we fired up the grill one last time and enjoyed all the summertime favorites before September would make me crave acorn squash and pumpkin spice.

The kids had some water play time while I cooked, and it seemed best to keep them undressed for a meal ripe with juices. Of course I loved this and grabbed my camera (proving my formula accurate so far!). I am ok with the focus a little off in some of these. It’s only fitting given the runny nose and food covered bodies. :) Besides, I can just hear his little giggle…

Summer, I will always love you, but you’re a little warm. Welcoming Fall with open arms this year. xo.

Baby Grace and Pink Blossoms

Meet the tiniest little sweet pea, baby Grace. This little 5lb nugget slept through our entire session and convinced me that her parents are rockstars. Her big brother, English Pointer Duke, was regal and excited and protective and baby Grace, I think you have a good gig here.

Scroll on for images of a sweet babe in a lovely backyard and perfectly timed blooms to welcome her this past spring.

I try to take a few pictures of my kids each month with my real camera. It doesn’t always happen and I end up going with when I’m inspired rather than scheduling it. Usually some combination of the light, how they look (whether cute outfits or naked and covered in dinner), and timing come together and I grab and shoot for a minute or two.

This is one of my favorite types of photography. It’s documentary in that I’m just photographing what is happening and not intervening at all or only slightly. That is real life to me. And yet, it’s “pretty” if I dare use that word. Documentary, but I don’t have my dirty kitchen in the background if I can help it. That memory will stay without any help from my camera roll. ;)

These are also my reminders that slow mornings are needed and valuable. Structure is essential for us, but I also love being able to say, “Sure you can… (play in the crib / help me with dinner / etc).

How do you celebrate / document / remember? Wishing you eyes to see what you want and breathing room to make it happen this week. xo.
