It's January already?!

personaljacqueline horningComment

I wanted to peek out from behind my desk and hundreds of files I want to edit (today!  ok, this week!) to say hello.  The quietness on the blog means I've been scurrying around in these cold months happily photographing babies and weddings.

When I'm not behind the camera with a client, I'm amazed at E's transformation to a little girl.  One day, around New Year's, she just started talking.  A lot.

Friends that hadn't seen her for a few weeks could suddenly understand her and she all of a sudden loved their attention.  How do things like this happen over night?

I'd like to remember the phrases ("doe-doe bad; no eat poop."  Ahem.  Yes, she remembers when our dog Chester found her diaper and Mama gagged for an hour.), the frilly pink skirt she suddenly loves, and how many times a day she asks, "Mama hold you".  Pronouns are still confusing.

These are the small, lovely moments of my days.

They aren't productive or clean and I now get why mountains of laundry is a common phrase among authors who write to moms.  ;)

I've had to go back to a few friends and apologize for disappearing for a month or two.  The calendar and to-do lists calling from within my (rather close together) four walls loomed large around the holidays.  It's ok to have busy times, but I look back and see I threw away the things that usually are built in to my days to keep me sane and grounded, and I felt it.

I usually treasure the first few weeks of January as slow times to purge the house, read, drink tea, clean up a bit - you know, hit reset.  Those slow weeks are coming a little late for me this year, but I'm more sure than most years that I need it.

Those friends didn't go anywhere (do they ever?  It's why they're the good ones.) and I'm grateful for them and to have some dates on the calendar to see them and a little more bandwidth to get over the hurdle and start regaining control of my mornings.

So, here's to January!  To new beginnings, good friends, amazing (and wise, generous, caring) grandparents, to times of prayer, to growing as a person and a photographer, and to living with a looser grasp on things I can't really hold on to anyway.

How are you?  What are you looking forward to in this new year?

A friend of mine had this verse written under the brim of a favorite baseball cap in college: "...his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning...".

Wishing you joy in 2016 and new mercies every morning.  xo.

Fall Mini Sessions 2015

Portraitsjacqueline horningComment

Pastorius Park, Chestnut Hill, PA

We had lovely weather for a mini session day back in October!  In no particular order, here are a few highlights from all of the day.  Enjoy!

Cuneo Family: Steph was just starting to pop with baby #2 so it was fun to highlight her little bump along with images of the entire family.

The Hivners: Their updated family portraits from C's newborn pictures and also a chance to celebrate (document) her first birthday!

For more information on mini sessions and to hear when the next mini session date will be, get in touch.

Local Love: Ben + Carol's E-Session

Engagement, Portraitsjacqueline horningComment

Valley Green, Philadelphia, PA

They spent a lot of time here while dating.  Her parents got engaged in front of the Inn and all of her family feels sentimental about the bridge.

If you are living (or have lived) in NW Philadelphia you are nodding your head and smiling because you, too, love this park.  Valley Green is a pretty amazing stretch of green within the city limits and the Inn serves as the anchor point.

These two were intentional about picking locations that were meaningful to them and I'm completely on board!  We quickly rearranged our calendars to squeeze in an e-session while leaves were still on the trees.

I started off with a manual lens for a little bit of a gritty look and I love the result.  Take a look, if you'd like:

Also, have I said how much I love my clients?  I work with the most wonderful people and these two were great from the very first interaction.  Their dynamic seeps right through the screen, don't you think?  :)

As we were talking wedding-day details, Carol said, "There are really only three essentials for the day: that we get married, that our pastor marries us, and our friends and family are present.  Everything else is negotiable."

Yep, she's amazing.

Ben and Carol, I'm psyched for you to be married and grateful to know you and work with you!  Congrats and can't wait for your wedding!  xo

Baby Maise

Mt. Airy, Philadelphia, PA

"I'm so glad we got them done when she was little, " Kristen said.  They had just seen the images from their little girl's newborn session and their baby was now four weeks old.

Yes, Maise was still only four weeks old.  I found myself nodding in agreement since all newborns change in the 2-3 weeks between photographing them and delivering images.  A split second later I realized how funny the statement sounded.  She's still so tiny...but it's so true!

These sessions are extra special because things change so fast.  I love photographing a family while they are still in that happy survival stage.  Everything is hard and awesome and for a few weeks, time doesn't really matter and the outside world is largely forgotten.

But, you're here for the pictures, right?  :)  It was a privilege to meet this lovely, talented (He's in law; she's in medicine), honest (They talked as though I wasn't there.  I loved it.) pair.  Little Maise is going to be one heck a of a girl.

Actually, she is already!  Enjoy this adorable little face!

Congratulations K+P!  So happy to meet you and your sweet little bundle!
